FACT SHEET 12: MITOCHONDRIAL INHERITANCE – Complex Patterns of Inheritance 2

A number of important genes are found outside the nucleus in another part of our cells called the mitochondria.  Just like the changes that can occur in the genes found in the nucleus, the DNA in the mitochondria can also contain a faulty gene.  Inheriting a faulty gene located on the mitochondrial DNA is called mitochondrial inheritance.
