When your baby is about 3-4 days old, a nurse will ask you whether you agree to have a small sample of blood taken from your baby. The sample involves a small pin prick to the heel and several blood spots dotted onto a card. The card is then sent to a laboratory for analysis. The blood is tested for a number of conditions for which we know early treatment greatly improves a baby’s health. It isn’t common to find these conditions, however we know that treating the few who are found makes it worth testing everyone. The test is paid for by our health care system regardless of whether you have your baby in a private or public hospital, or a home birth.
